Message hits home
A home guard deployed in the ladies first-class compartment of a local train to ensure the safety of passengers after 9 pm, received a long lecture from some of the women travelling by the same local.

The cop, a regular on the route every night, had made it a habit to stand near the door, blocking one side and creating a problem for those trying to get off the train. On Thursday night on a Karjat-bound train, he was again seen blocking one side of the door, talking to a colleague standing on the platform.

When a passenger told him to move, he replied in a rude manner. But he hadn’t bargained for what followed. All the other women passengers, tired of the homeguard’s ways, started shouting at him for forgetting his duty and creating problems for women commuters instead.

Realising he was outnumbered, the man quietly returned to a seat inside the compartment, and stayed put till Karjat. Hopefully he will do a better job in the days to come.

Fashion sense
Election fever may have gripped the rest, but the Thackerays seem to be chilling out, with enough time in their hands.

While Aditya Thackeray was seen attending a fashion show, along with actors Riteish Deshmukh and Genelia D’souza, his mother Rashmi Thackeray too was spotted at the ongoing fashion week on Friday. Who says politicians don’t have time for fashion?

Blasting his way into exams
Students appearing for their launguage paper as part of the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education’s Higher Secondary Course in Bengal, were in for a pleasant surprise this week, when they reached Question No 11 an essay.

The topic for the 500-word, 15-mark essay was: The legacy of Indian cricket and Sachin Tendulkar. The Standard XII students, it is learnt, relished the subject and let their creative juices flow as they wrote on the legendary cricketer’s legacy, right from his 1989 debut in Pakistan to his Bharat Ratna award.

There was certainly no shortage of ideas ,given that Tendulkar has been a youth icon for over two and a half decades and has achieved everything there is to achieve in the field of cricket. Clearly, the idea to include the ‘Master Blaster’ as a board examination question, was nothing short of a masterstroke.

Good governance
There is a change in the atmosphere at the Mantralaya after the Election Commission announced the Lok Sabha polls on March 5. As the model code of conduct came into effect, smiles on the faces of the administrative staff were clearly visible.

In a meeting, the state chief secretary asked departmental secretaries to come up with 10 suggestions each for ‘good governance’ — ideas that could be used for initiating administrative reforms. While the final shortlist of ‘implement-able ideas’ is not known yet, one hopes at least a few administrative reforms will be visible in government offices soon.

Michael comes to town
Former world billiards champion Michael Ferreira who had a lookout notice against him and cannot leave the country, raised a few eyebrows when he landed up at a sports awards function in the city earlier this week. The former sporting icon has been in the news for all the wrong reasons of late for his alleged role in a financial scam.

The awards function, held to felicitate sporting heroes, was attended by many of India’s leading sports stars from different fields. Ferreira sat by himself in a corner, dressed nattily in a black suit but looking uncomfortable at times as cameras focused on him. Maybe he didn’t like anyone looking for him, even through a camera lense.
