The city — sliced, diced and served with a dash of sauce
Tarzan, the wonder milk van!
While driving along the Western Express Highway late at night, one is used to seeing fast cars and zooming bikes.

Qureshi and his modified van, Tarzan
What one was not prepared for was this ‘modified’ three-wheeler, called Tarzan. We could not help but stop and ask its driver about his unique vehicle.
The affable Imran Qureshi is a handicapped milkman and says he modified the vehicle in order to transport milk containers each morning. Innovative and ingenious more power to him and Tarzan!
Yo Yo, Hirdesh!
There is spam, and then there is spam. And then there is still more spam. So when we received an email from someone named Hirdesh Singh, who is not in our address book and not a name we recognise, we thought it was yet another instance of mass mail. But like good journos, we don’t trash before giving it at least one look.
Yo Yo Honey Singh
Lo and behold, it turns out that Hirdesh Singh is the real and official name of the pop star better known as Yo Yo Honey Singh, and he was writing in to us regarding a story. Let’s face it, we can’t quite imagine a hit-maker named Hirdesh, so it’s probably for the best that Singh has chosen the memorable moniker of Honey.
Xavier Almeida remembered
Xavier Almeida was missed at the recent Willingdon Catholic Gymkhana inter-parish rink football tournament that concluded on Sunday. Almeida, one of the most prominent commentators of Mumbai’s rink hockey and rink football tournaments, passed away on September 8 at the age of 74 after a brief illness.
The late Xavier Almeida
The 27th edition of the WCG tournament was the first without Xavier, and the organisers and even teams mourned for their star speaker. “We have put up a banner in memory of Xavier at the venue. He truly was the voice of rink football in Mumbai,” hockey Olympian and WCG sports secretary Merwyn Fernandes told mid-day.
Another prominent former city-based hockey Olympian, Joaquim Carvalho, added, “Some of the teams at the tournament even wore black arm bands to mourn Xavier’s loss.”
Meanwhile, Xavier’s successor Edgar Cornelio was seen doing a fine job, having taken up the baton of his predecessor. “Zor ka jhatka dheere se lagey,” screamed Edgar on the microphone as one striker’s power-backed shot deflected past a defender and hopelessly crawled into the goal.
Birthday cake leaves bad taste
Mumbai Mayor Snehal Ambekar has undertaken a programme to make fellow corporators in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation feel happy and proud on their birthdays.
It’s nothing more than a personalized letter wishing them, and Ambekar, the first mayor to take such a step, feels it will improve relations between corporators, especially those from opposing parties.
“When a corporator gets a birthday wish on the mayor’s letterhead, it is sure to be a proud moment for them.” However, officials from the municipal secretariat are not enthused by the mayor’s logic.
“The BMC is planning to become paperless and here the mayor is planning to waste paper by sending birthday wishes. In a time of social media, this step seems illogical,” said one of the officials.
