Art hits the outdoors

For the first time in its history, The Bombay Art Society has organised a live painting / sculpting event where art enthusiasts can witness artists working live using distinct painting styles like portraits, landscapes, and creative, as well as sculptures, ceramics and craft in the school campus.

The Society was established in 1888 with the objective of encouraging artists and educating the public for appreciation of arts. Since its inception it has been trying to promote public art not in the traditional sense but in an open air set-up where the works become more fluid and inclusive.

Predating it by a decade, Sir JJ School of Art remains one of the pioneering institutes of fine art education in India, since it was set up in 1878 on the current campus. It has given India some of its revolutionary artists who went on to make a global impact.

Vikas Khanna and milk tales
Guess what’s keeping Vikas Khanna busy these days? No, he isn’t whipping up new recipes or opening a new restaurant. Instead, he has been busy working on an illustrated book for kids.

Titled The Milk Moustache (Puffin Books), it’s a tale of goodwill and friendship, and revolves around the escapades of Jassi, a local milkman’s daughter, Kali the cow and Sur, the nightingale.

While we’d have preferred the Michelin-starred chef to narrate a culinary tale (how cool would Miss Pani Puri and Mr Dahi Bhalla be as characters!), we fell in love with the cutesy illustrations by Mihir Joglekar.

Cabana in the city
Don’t miss out on the 2nd edition of Couture Cabanas at Asilo in Lower Parel set for a launch this evening at 8 pm. Four fashion designers will re-design these cabanas inspired by signature cocktails.

Krishna Mehta’s Cabana inspired by Golden Delight has everything from the upholstery to the décor going gold. Drawing her inspiration from the cocktail, Deft Blue, Maheka Mirpuri’s cabana is dressed up in large trees, twigs, violets, and cherry blossoms.

Designer Payal Singhal’s Cabana has been inspired by the Shire flower. The Cabana uses hand-made elements of lace and crochet. Anand Kabra’s Cabana is inspired from the Honey Rose Petal cocktail.

It uses monochromes paired with chandeliers and rose petals. The signature cocktails will also be served exclusively during the showcasing of the Couture Cabanas, till December 17.
