The city witnessed three incidents of house break-ins over 48 hours — in Kandivli, Grant Road and Chembur. While the accused in the Kandivli case has been arrested and the booty recovered, the police are on the lookout for the culprits in the other two incidents.
Kandivli: Rs 25 lakh
The police have arrested a 36-year-old carpenter, Narayan Sutar, for allegedly stealing valuables worth R25 lakh from the house of one Usha Venkateshan (42), a banker who lives in Hiranandani Heritage.
Venkateshan had asked a contractor, identified as Bharat, to send three carpenters to her home for some work. The three worked there from September 17 to 19.
On the 19th, she found a Rolex watch worth Rs 20 lakh, a pair of diamond earrings worth R4 lakh, and a 40-gram gold bracelet worth Rs 1 lakh missing.

She approached the Kandivli police, who asked her about the people who had visited her over the last two days. With the contractor’s help, the three carpenters were brought to her house, and the police detained and interrogated them.
After hours of questioning, Sutar confessed to the crime.
The entire booty has been recovered and Sutar has been arrested.
Grant Road: Rs 8.58 lakh
Rs 8.58 lakh in cash was stolen from a watch shop located exactly opposite the DB Marg police station. The owner discovered the theft on Tuesday at 8.30 am, when he opened the shop. A case of theft has been registered in DB Marg police station.
Sapna Stores is on Maulana Shaukat Ali Road in Grant Road. When its owner Vipul Shah (42) reached to open it on Tuesday, he found the shutter half open. Sensing foul play, he opened the shop and checked the vault and found the money missing.
In his complaint, Shah told police that two of his employees had left work in the last two months and both had keys to the shop. He also told officers that apart from him, only his workers knew that the vault was behind a wall clock.
The police have registered a case under sections 380 (theft in dwelling house), 454 (house break-in), and 457 (house break-in by night) of the Indian Penal Code.
Chembur: Rs 17.9 lakh
Cash and ornaments worth Rs 17.9 lakh were stolen from the house of a retired banker, Narayan Gohil, on Sunday night. Gohil was away on a pilgrimage with his family members.

The theft was discovered on Monday morning, when Jayantilal Maru, a close relative of the Gohils, went to check on the flat in Bhakti Bhavan. He found door bolt broken and, on going inside, the entire house in disarray. He then called up the Chembur police. Rs 2.02 lakh cash, 63 tola gold ornaments, and 40 tola silver ornaments have been stolen.

Senior Inspector Sandeep Dal said, “We are checking footage of the CCTVs put up in the society. It appears that someone had been keeping a watch on this particular house and looted it after the family went away. We have registered a case against unknown person/s under sections 380 (theft in dwelling house), 454 (house break-in), and 457 (house break-in by night) of the Indian Penal Code.
