A week after the assassination of former Shiv Sena corporator Ashok Sawant, the mastermind, Anil Waghmare, has revealed that he was not the final target - Sawant was killed merely to send a message to his associate, who is a builder. The accused had planned to extort money from the builder. The police have also arrested a former cop who sheltered Waghmare while he was on the run.

Waghmare told the police that he wanted to make an example of Sawant, who had foiled his attempts to extort the builder. Waghmare, who was an MPSC tutor, had filed RTI queries against the builder's project and began to demand hush money in exchange for suppressing the allegations. Initially, the builder would cough up the money ever month, but the payments stopped after he got Sawant's support.

Sawant, a former two-time corporator from Samata Nagar, had plenty of clout in the area, and he promised to help the builder. When the payments dried up, Waghmare started to plot Sawant's murder, to teach the builder a lesson. Friendships turn sour mid-day had earlier reported that Waghmare and Sawant were once friends, but grew into foes because Sawant would foil Waghmare's extortion bids.

Another accused in the case, Jagdish Pawar, also used to be on good terms with the victim. Pawar used to work for Sawant's cable business, but got fired when he began to support Waghmare. Sawant also refused to pay Pawar, which pushed him to join Waghmare in the murder conspiracy. Pawar and another accused, Abhishek Mane, are still absconding. All arrested accused are in police custody till January 18.
