If you thought your children were safe alone at home, under the protection of the residential security guard, think again. The Santacruz police recently arrested a watchman for sexually abusing a three-year-old who lived in the building where he works, taking advantage of her parents’ absence.

According to the police, on January 23, the accused took the survivor to the terrace, where he molested her and forced her into oral sex. The accused, Rajendra Posaiya Arkila (23), at first denied the crime, but confessed when the cops showed him CCTV footage that had captured him taking the girl to the building terrace.

Senior PI P Chavan from Santacruz police station said, “On the day of the incident the accused saw the girl riding her cycle alone, so he decided to take advantage of the situation and took her to the terrace where he committed an unnatural offence with the survivor.”

Arkila then took the little girl back to her house and escaped. The survivor complained to her parents of severe pain in her mouth, after which they asked her what had happened. When the watchman returned to the building, the girl’s parents and a few other residents caught hold of him and thrashed him, later taking him to the police station.

“The accused initially denied the crime, but later when we went through the CCTV footage from the building premises, we noticed that the accused had taken the survivor to the terrace while holding her hand,” said a police officer.

The police said Arkila, who hails from Jharkhand, had been working in the city for a year. Six months ago, he began working at the Santacruz residential building, after his previous employer accused him of theft.

He was booked under sections 377 (unnatural sex, against the order of nature”) and 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) of the Indian Penal Code along with sections 4, 8 and 12 under Protection of Children from Sexual Offences act.
