The accused, identified as Abhijeet Matharu, is a resident of Krishna building, opposite Iskcon temple, in Juhu. Matharu used to take private tuition classes in his home and the Std X girl was one of his students.

On July 21, the girl went to Matharu’s residence for the classes and he was alone at home. Around 2.45 pm, he forcibly took the girl inside the bathroom and locked the door.

The girl later told the police that he had molested her and forced her to perform oral sex on him. At 3.30 pm, he let the girl leave but threatened her with dire consequences if she spoke about the incident. The survivor told her parents and they took her to the MHB police station in Borivli the same day.

An FIR was filed under Sections 347 (wrongful confinement), 376 (punishment for rape), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC and under the Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences Act 2012.

Since the case had taken place in the Juhu police’s jurisdiction, the case was transferred to them on July 22, but they allegedly did not take any action. This delay gave Matharu enough time to flee the country, which he did the same month, and he hasn’t come back since.
