Mumbai Crime: Man stabs 19-year-old girl five times

A 23-year-old man has been arrested for stabbing a 19-year-old girl five times in Kandivli. The incident occurred at 6 pm on Wednesday when the victim Vineeta Santosh Ahire, studying in FYBCom, had gone to her friend, Pooja Ramesh Pawar’s (19) house.

Pooja and Vineeta are close friends, and they regularly visit each other. Vineeta went to Pooja’s house, to ask her to accompany her to a nearby market, but Pooja, who was busy watching a television serial, asked her to wait for a while.

Pooja resides at Sant Rohi Das Chawl, Narseepada, Kandivli (East). When both Pooja and victim Vineeta came out of the house, which is on the first floor, the accused, Kailash Jadhav Pawar, who is also a cousin of Pooja, grabbed Vineeta from behind and stabbed her on her neck. Pooja came to her rescue, and tried to push away the accused.

According to the police, the accused stabbed Vineeta five times. On hearing the ruckus, people around the building rushed to the spot and rescued the victim. The accused was immediately taken to the Samta Nagar police station, while the victim was rushed to DNA hospital near Lokhandwala complex in Kandivali East.

Gruesome attack
Vineeta was admitted to the ICU, where her condition is serious. She has also received stitches for her stab wounds. The family of the victim alleged that when police arrived at the hospital for the girl’s statement, they asked them as to why had they admitted her in a private hospital.

“The police’s attitude was very astonishing, when they said that we should have not admitted her in a private hospital. Anyone who faces such a situation does not think of these things before deciding where he or she should be admitted. We cannot see our dear ones in pain,” said DV Suran, the victim’s brother-in-law.

According to the police, the family of the accused said that Kailash is mentally ill and that he has been under medication for many days. “We interrogated the accused and the motive behind the incident is not yet known. The family said that he is mentally ill. We are also investigating the angle of a one-sided affair,” said a police officer.

Sources say that the accused is addicted to alcohol and is well known for spreading nuisance in the area. Police will find out through a medical test whether he is really mentally ill, or acts to be so. On the other hand, Chabbabai Ahire, the victim’s mother, told mid-day, “We don’t have any grouse with the accused. We don’t have a clue why he assaulted my daughter. Around six months ago, he has attacked a relative with a chopper.”

Cop speak
Additional Commissioner of Police (north region) Fateh Singh Patil said, “We have registered a complaint against the accused. And parents have the full authority of admitting their relatives to any hospital they want. No one has the right to stop them. If the victim’s family has some complaint against the officer, they should meet me and I will conduct the inquiry as per the law,” said Patil.
