In yet another disturbing case of crimes against women in transit, a 25-year-old woman was assaulted and robbed by an unknown assailant in the early hours yesterday inside a local train.

The incident occurred around 4.50 am on Thursday morning, when Apoorva Chakravorty, a resident of Bhayander (E), boarded the train originating from the same station for her workplace.
Apoorva, who has got married recently, came to the railway station along with her husband, and boarded a second-class ladies compartment in the middle of a Churchgate-bound local.
She was alone in the train as it left the station. When it reached Mira Road, an unknown man in his late 30s entered the coach. As the train picked up speed, the man came towards Apoorva and hit her on the head with a weapon.
Se bravely tried to fight off the assailant, who was clawing at her, and she started bleeding due to the injuries. The Government Railway Police (GRP) officers said that he robbed her of her gold necklace and bangles worth around R21,000.
As the train slowed down before approaching Dahisar station, the assailant jumped off before it came to a halt. An injured Apoorva began screaming for help, and soon a crowd, including policemen, gathered at the station.
“The victim was taken to the Borivli GRP office. Later, she was taken to Shatabdi Hospital,” said a police officer from Vasai railway police station. The incident highlights the need for policemen to be present inside ladies compartments, especially during dark hours.
Sources said that a constable was supposed to board at Bhayander station, but he got on the train only at Dahisar, which is after the crime had come to pass. The case has been transferred to Vasai GRP as it falls under their jurisdiction.
Later, Apoorva was taken to a private hospital where she received four stitches on her head. “She received minor injuries on her head. We are investigating the matter,” said Deepak Devraj, DCP (Western Railway), Government Railway Police.
