Mumbai: Woman gives birth in toilet, baby gets stuck, dies soon after

In a tragic incident, a baby boy died when he got stuck in the toilet immediately after his mother gave birth at their home in Malad yesterday. The woman, a 27-year-old, had been given the due date of October 11 by doctors. However, the date passed and she was undergoing regular check-ups.

On Monday when she went to the ‘Indian-style’ toilet to relieve herself, she suddenly gave birth. When the baby got stuck, she yelled for her mother-in-law for help, but they could not free him, and soon called the neighbours. Police say one of them, a doctor, also tried to free the baby but couldn’t do so.

Senior Inspector Arun Mane of Malad police station said, “On Monday at 3.30 pm, the woman had gone to the toilet to relieve herself. Suddenly she delivered the baby. The baby’s head got stuck in the bowl, in the pipe carrying the waste further inside. Not knowing what to do, the family called us for help. We rushed to the spot with an ambulance and fire brigade team.

We broke the toilet tiles and freed the newborn and rushed him to a hospital, but he was declared dead.” Mane added, “It was not the mother’s fault. We only registered an Accidental Death Report in the case. The mother has been admitted to a hospital and she is undergoing treatment.”
