In what appears to be their last attempt to salvage the ‘UTS on mobile’ app, the railway authorities have spruced it up for Android and Windows phone users.

The officials claim that an app user can now book tickets from anywhere within a 2-km radius of the stations that are equipped with the facility. Currently, this facility is available only on the Western Railway (WR) — between Churchgate and Dahanu.

Explaining the functionality of the app, C P Sharma, chief commercial manager, WR, said, “Arrangement has been made to ensure that a commuter doesn’t book a ticket upon spotting a ticket checker (TC). An app user can’t book ticket(s) if s/he is less than 30 metres away from the station or beyond the 2 km radius.

If so, then the user will be intimated. Since the tickets will be booked using the GPS, the phone’s location will be recorded at time of booking.” When asked when the mobile ticketing services would be introduced on the Central and Harbour lines, an official from the Centre for Railway Information Systems said it would take at least two months.
