The doctor, who refers to himself as a ‘cancer surgeon’, has allegedly violated service conditions by practising in more than one private hospital
A senior surgeon from Sion Hospital is undergoing a second inquiry after an initial probe found him at fault for violation of service conditions. According to BMC rules, civic doctors cannot practice in more than one private hospital, but the inquiry report has observed surgeon Dr Prabhakar Subramaniyan has flouted the norms. “There were some disparities in the first report, so it has been transferred to Nair Dental College,” said Dr Avinash Supe, KEM hospital dean and director of all major hospitals in Mumbai.

What the rulebook states
According to the BMC rulebook, a civic doctor who doesn’t claim non-practice allowance can practice in a single private hospital after the stipulated eight working hours.
The allegations
Documents accessed by mid-day revealed that Dr Subramaniyan is allowed to practice only at Icon Hospital, Dombivli. But a patient, CM Kulkarni, has stated that he underwent a surgery under Dr Subramaniyan’s supervision at a Mulund Hospital. “The doctor even charged me a fee of Rs 75,000,” Kulkarni said. He has filed a complaint with BMC and claimed he has bills to substantiate his claims. Kulkarni has also alleged Dr Subramaniyan uses the designation of ‘cancer surgeon’.
On the defence
Refuting the charges, Dr Subramaniyan told mid-day, “Few years ago, when there was no specialisation, MS doctors operated on cancer patients. So, it’s not wrong to call myself an onco-surgeon.”
Even Sion Hospital asserts the surgeon has done no wrong. “Being a senior surgeon, he often get calls for assistance from his juniors. This is a similar case,” said Rajeev Singh, assistant dean of Sion Hospital.
Kishore Taore, chairman of the Maharashtra Medical Council said, “In such cases we issue a warning. If not rectified, the doctor’s licence can be suspended for a certain period.”
