On Wednesday at 7.30 pm, Harshada Jadhav (22), a police constable from Bhiwandi police station, was injured by a stone hurled at the ladies’ compartment in which she was travelling, between Mankhurd and Govandi stations.

Jadhav was rushed to Rajawadi Hospital, Ghatkopar. The Vashi GRP the area falls under their jurisdiction have filed a complaint against unknown persons under Section 152 of the Indian Railways Act (maliciously hurting or attempting to hurt persons travelling by railway).

The incident took place when Jadhav, a Mankhurd resident, was standing at the door of the compartment while on her way to Kurla. After the train passed Govandi, a stone hurled at the train struck her in the face and split her lip. Luckily, Jadhav didn’t fall out of the train due to the impact.

She started bleeding profusely and informed the GRP officials at the next stop about the incident. “We sent a lady constable and senior officer along with Jadhav to Rajawadi Hospital immediately, so that she could get treatment.

While the stone-thrower wasn’t nabbed, we have filed a complaint against unknown persons and are investigating as to who is responsible for the act alongside the railway line,” said a police official. The police are also carrying out a widespread awareness programme for those staying alongside railway lines regarding the stone pelting issue.

In the February mishap, Pawar, an accounts assistant, had lost her life after being hit by a stone; she had fallen off the local near Ambernath station. Police are now arranging meetings with local teenagers and children to create awareness about the grave effects of such incidents.
