A love for samosas left a seven-year-old child severely injured as a bus ferrying employees to their office ran over him in Powai. On Monday morning, while Mayur Chougule was rushing to one of the nearby temples where snacks are distributed as prasad, the private bus accidentally ran over him in front of a Gaondevi temple.

The child sustained major injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital and later shifted to a private hospital for treatment. The Powai police station, under whose jurisdiction the vicinity falls, arrested the driver of the bus. Yesterday, at around 10.30 am, the Gaondevi temple at Powai was distributing samosas as prasad to devotees and others present in the temple, as per tradition.

This activity has been going on for the past 36 years. People from the vicinity also line up to take the prasad daily. Chougule, who resides in the chawl opposite the temple, also rushed to the temple, crossing the road, to take his favourite prasad. However, he could not reach his destination.

At the same time, a private bus was on its way to the office and the accused, driver Mohan Bhagwat, allegedly failed to apply brakes on time. The bus ended up running over Chougule, injuring him badly. Locals rushed the boy to Rajawadi Hospital. The driver accompanied the boy.

“I came out when I saw a commotion and saw that an accident had taken place. While the boy was immediately taken to the hospital, the driver accepted his mistake and was willing to pay for the medical expenses of the boy. He was arrested by Powai police since he was speeding the vehicle,” said an onlooker.

Since he was brought to the hospital first we treated him and decided to shift him to Seven Hills Hospital for better treatment. He remains to be critical,” said the doctor. An FIR has been filed under sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life), 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others), Section 184 Motor Vehicle Act (driving dangerously).
