Sanjeev Patil, the constable, lay bleeding on the street before he was taken to the KEM Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The incident took place early in the morning around 8 am when 52-year-old Patil was out for a morning walk. He was a resident of Ganesh Nagar in Wadala (East) and had been working as a police constable with Antop Hill Police Station.

Lost control
PSI Nitin Chandramore from Wadala Police Station, the investigating officer in the case, said that the accused, 32-year-old Gajendra Kumar Sukhdevsingh fell asleep at the wheel, and lost control of the vehicle. The trailer ran over Patil who was unable to get out of the way in time. After running over Patil, the trailer went on to crush seven taxis, parked alongside the road, two of which were completely damaged due to the impact, and the speed of the vehicle.

Locals who witnessed the incident called the police control room, after which Wadala Police officials rushed to the spot. They found Patil lying on the road, profusely bleeding. They rushed him to KEM Hospital. However, due to the impact of the injury, he was pronounced dead on arrival. “The patient had suffered a severe head injury and there was a lot of blood loss,” said a doctor from the hospital.

Patil’s body was sent for post mortem and the police registered an Accidental Death Report. His son Sumit has taken Patil’s remains to their native village for the last rites.
