His alleged failure to act against the increasing number of chain-snatching incidents in his area led the senior police inspector of Kandivli police station to spend two days in the control room as punishment.

Police Commissioner Rakesh Maria sent Mahipati Pandharmise, senior police inspector of Kandivli police station, to the control room. According to police sources, Maria has instructed senior inspectors of all the police stations to give him a detailed daily report of chain-snatching incidents in their jurisdictions.

After a series of such incidents took place in Kandivli, including one last week, Pandharmise was ordered to report to the North Region control room for two days. In the control room, the officer has to be on call to collect and relay information to the concerned officers.

The room is a very busy department and officers have to constantly be on all. Police sources said attending these phone calls is helpful in learning how to crack the whip on chain snatching.

Four senior officers of the North Region have been meted out this punishment; they were from Samta Nagar, MHB Colony, Borivli and Kasturba Marg police stations. In 2013, 2,090 chain snatching cases were registered in the North Region (Dahisar to Goregaon), of which only 793 were solved.
