Here's a case for karma. Despite the perfect tip-off that led to the perfect plan of striking a money exchange firm that supposedly had Rs 25 lakh in its vault, luck did not favour these two men and they only managed to steal Rs 3,000 and an iPhone at the store.

In worse news for the duo, not only were they spotted in the CCTVs installed at the store, the police has also managed to get the number of their getaway taxi that made both the drop-off and the pick-up.

Spot of good luck
On Friday morning, when Yusuf Khokawala reached AN Forex, a money exchange firm located near GPO at 11 am, he found both the locks and the door broken.

He then immediately called the owner, Ammil Noor Mohammed (35), who started checking his office for what was missing and alerted the MRA police station.

Mohammed said, "In the first floor vault, we had kept R25 lakh while another drawer had R1 lakh in it. Usually, I leave the keys back in my office desk, but considering the cash involved this day, I decided to carry the key with me, and that turned out to be very lucky for us. So ultimately, the only thing missing was R3,000 and one iPhone. Even better, when we checked the CCTV, their entire effort was caught on camera."

Struck by bad luck
According to the footage collected from the store and the traffic camera, at around 2.45 am, one taxi came and dropped off a cutter and iron rod in front of the firm. Five minutes later, two men in their 20s came out from nowhere, picked up the tools and went to the store's backside where they broke in from.

"Both the thieves were inside for 30 to 40 minutes. First, they tried to search for the vault keys on the first floor, but when they couldn't find it, they got restless and came down searching all the drawers," said Mohammed.

An officer from MRA police station added, "After not getting anything for almost an hour, the duo just picked up one stack of torn currency and an iPhone and left. Outside, the same taxi returned to pick them up. We have got the number of the taxi and are searching for it."

Cops say
As per the complaint, cops have registered a case of theft under IPC 380 (theft) and 457 (house breaking by night).

"We suspect someone had provided them a tip-off regarding the amount of cash inside the firm or the thieves must have kept a close watch on the movement and transactions," said the officer.
