Mumbai: Cops nab robbers after high-speed midnight chase through SoBo

Cops from five police stations, 20 police cars and bikes chased four robbers on two bikes through Marine Drive, Cuffe Parade and Azad Maidan, finally catching them at Colaba

Residents of south Mumbai could not be blamed for thinking a Bollywood film was playing out on their roads in the middle of the night. Cops from five police stations, some of them in 20 police cars and bikes were chasing four robbers who were on two bikes through Marine Drive, Cuffe Parade, Pydhonie, Colaba and Azad Maidan. The high-speed chase finally ended 45 minutes later at Colaba when one of the robbers’ bikes crashed into a police vehicle.

Around 2 am on Monday, a 17-year-old boy was sitting on the footpath at NS Road in front of Grant Medical gymkhana. Four youths on two bikes suddenly stopped in front of the 17-year-old and flashed a knife at him. They then snatched his gold chain and took Rs 10,000 in cash from his pocket. According to the police, when the accused spotted the boy’s ATM card in the wallet they forced him onto one of the bikes and took him to Crawford Market to find an ATM where he could withdraw cash from. The teenager, however, spotted a police patrol van from MRA Marg police station. He somehow slipped off the bike he was on and ran to tell the cops about what had happened. The police immediately started to chase the bikers.

On the way, they passed on wireless messages and informed the police control room. The police said the bikers were speeding at more than 120 kmph and led the cops on a merry chase around town. Whenever the riders saw a nakabandi set up by the cops, they made U-turn and escaped by speeding in the wrong direction. The accused went from the Fort area, Cuffe Parade, Mantralaya Air India building, Marine Drive bridge, Bhuleshwar and the back to Cuffe Parade.

At Colaba, a team of five cops had set-up a nakabandi at Musmarg, Colaba. One of the two bikes manages to dodge the nakabandi and escaped, while one bike crashed into the police vehicle. The pillion ride immediately got off and escaped, while the rider was caught by the police who discovered he was just 16 years old.

Two separate cases have been registered by the police in the matter. A Cuffe Parade police station, a case has been registered under section 279, 336 and 353 for crashing into a police vehicle and injuring police officers. The second case has been registered at Marine Drive police station for looting and kidnapping a 17-year-old boy.

A police officer said, “A preliminary inquiry with the accused revealed that all the bikers are from the Baiganwadi area of Govandi. The others have been identified. Hopefully, all will be arrested soon.”
