A parking tiff led to the assault of Bhojpuri actor Sikandar Khan and his wife in Jogeshwari; Oshiwara police refused to file an FIR in absence of ‘external injuries’

Mumbai: Cops let actor's assailants leave with just a warning

When Bhojpuri actor Sikandar Khan hauled the men who assaulted him and his wife to the Oshiwara police station, little did he know that his efforts to register a case against them would be reduced to a mere non-cognisable (NC) complaint. The police refused to register a First Information Report (FIR) in the case since Khan and his wife had no ‘external injuries.’

The actor and his wife were assaulted by a mob of locals over a parking issue on the Behram Baug Link Road in Jogeshwari West on Saturday evening, when they were out shopping with their three daughters.

When the family reached the Link Road, Khan asked his driver to park the car near a shop and went inside. Within a minute, a man asked Khan’s driver to vacate the spot, as he wanted to park his car there. The driver complied and moved out. But when he saw the man leaving the spot, the driver again parked the vehicle there.

Right then, the man returned, demanded the spot back and allegedly began abusing the driver.

When he spotted his driver in trouble, Khan jumped in and asked the man to stop spewing abuses. The enraged man then allegedly began assaulting the actor. Some shopkeepers, too, allegedly joined in. Khan’s wife, Jannat, jumped into the fray to save her husband, but the locals shoved her.

Later, Khan called the Mumbai police control room and with the help of constables, he managed to catch hold of his assailants. He took them to the Oshiwara police station. On his arrival, the police told him that since he had no injury marks on his body, they couldn’t register an FIR. They filed an NC, gave only a warning to the locals and asked them to leave.

According to Khan, he had suffered internal injuries since the assailants had punched him several times. The goons also assaulted his wife, but the police did not take any action against them, he said.

“We were shocked when the police asked them to leave after just giving them a warning. They assaulted my wife as well. Why then have the police not taken any action against them?”

Senior PI says
Senior Inspector Subhash Khandvilkar of the Oshiwara police station said, “My staff has not reported any such incident to me. I will have to check the records for this.”
