Auto passenger Shakil Ibrahim Zariwala who made threatening remarks before assaulting traffic warden on SV Road in Mumbai in front of traffic cops, was arrested and booked under various IPC acts.

The traffic police appear to be at the receiving end of commuter-rage of late, with more cases of cop assault coming to the fore. Following the brutal attack on traffic constable Vilas Shinde, who died on Wednesday, another official was beaten up by a passenger of an autorickshaw, late on Thursday night.

According to the police, traffic warden Vishwanthan Rane (38) was on patrol duty on SV Road in Andheri, when the incident took place. Rane was diverting vehicles, to avoid a bottleneck-like situation on the road, when Shakil Ibrahim Zariwala (43), who was travelling in an auto, asked his driver to stop next to Rane. He then got out of the three-wheeler, and started arguing with the warden, saying that all cops should be killed.

The argument got ugly when Zariwala started assaulting Rane. Traffic cops, who were in the vicinty, rushed to the scene and rescued Rane.

Zariwala was then handed over to the Andheri police station. He was arrested and booked under Sections 353 (assault or criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace) of the Indian Penal code.
