When the woman found her husband hanging from the ceiling fan, she couldn’t take it and killed herself the same way using the same dupatta; the girl witnessed both the incidents
A Thane couple committed suicide in their apartment at 11:30 am yesterday. Bharat Chauhan (32) was the first to take the extreme step, after which his wife Nilima Chauhan alias Nisha (30), too, did the same.

They were residents of Shivneri Apartment at Padwal Nagar, Srinagar in Thane (West) and were living with their eight-year-old daughter, Alisha, who witnessed both the incidents.
Around 10:30 am, Bharat took the extreme step by hanging himself from the ceiling fan with a dupatta. When his wife Nilima entered the room, she was aghast to see her husband’s hanging body. She immediately called up her sister Meghna Surve and explained to her what had happened.
Disturbed and in shock, she told Meghna that she, too, had decided to do the same. Meghna tried to reason with her and promised her that she would be there in 10 minutes. But by the time she reached Nilima’s place, it was too late. She had already brought her husband’s body down and used the same dupatta to kill herself.
The young girl was traumatised after watching her parents take their own lives one after the other. She mustered courage and approached the neighbours for help, who then informed the police. The police found pieces of paper lying inside the toilet. When they put them together, they read: “I am useless and I am really sorry, Alisha”.
Whether it was the father or the mother who wrote the note is not known. The bodies were taken to a civic hospital where they were declared brought dead. The couple had a love marriage in 2003 and had been renting the apartment for the last six months. Bharat worked for a private transport firm and Nilima was a housewife.
Police Sub Inspector Sangeeta Shankar Ravi from Srinagar police station said, “The couple had asked for more than Rs 25,000 from their landlord. One of Nilima’s cousins told us that they were going through a financial
crisis.” A case of accidental death has been registered.
