The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) yesterday demolished 50-60 illegal extensions of shops near Andheri (west) station, and also demolished seven shops that were altogether illegal.

Shop owners claimed they suffered heavy losses during the drive, but the civic body says it will continue the drive against illegal establishments for at least eight more days.

Acting on HC orders
“The drive is going to continue in other parts of the ward as well. Every illegal establishment and projection will be pulled down. We are taking action as per High Court orders. The objective is to allow space for commuters, especially pedestrians. The drive will go on for at least eight days,” said assistant municipal commissioner of K/West ward Parag Masurkar.
Crackdown
The civic body has been cracking down on illegal establishments in all parts of the city for the past few days. mid-day had earlier reported on the demolishment of around 250 shanties in Wadala last week. Similar drives have been undertaken in Dadar, Matunga, Parel and other parts of the city where hawkers, eateries allowing cooking on the roadside, illegal structures or projections are being demolished.
