Five youngsters were at Versova beach on Saturday afternoon when three of them decided to go for a swim, and drowned

Out celebrating his birthday with four close friends, Rohit Tiwari, 27, drowned in the sea off Versova beach on Saturday afternoon. His body, along with that of another friend, Satyaprakash Chauhan, 25, is yet to be found. A third friend, Priyansh Yadav, 26, was pulled out of the water by a lifeguard, but was declared dead by Cooper Hospital doctors before admission. The police have not revealed the names of the other two friends. They were at a beach side café when three of them decided to take a dip in the sea.

The others youngsters had travelled all the way from Madhya Pradesh only to spend the day with Tiwari, who had recently moved to Mhada area of Andheri.


According to Fire Brigade officials, “We received a call around 3.30 pm that three people had drowned in the sea near the rocky beach in Versova. Our team immediately reached the spot and started rescue operations. One of the boys was even rescued by the lifeguards with the help of other people and he was rushed to hospital, but it was too late.”

At the time of going to press, fire brigade officials were still looking for the bodies of the other two who had drowned. Lifeguards said that they had told the youngsters, who were consuming alcohol by the beach, to leave but they did not pay any attention. A police team, too, arrived at the spot within minutes.

“The search operation is still going on. An accidental death case has been registered and we are conducting regular investigations,” said Sr PI Kiran Kale of Versova police station.

The Cooper Hospital doctors have said that Yadav’s post-mortem would be conducted on Sunday.
