Mumbai: 22-year-old Army recruit commits suicide

A 22-year-old army recruit on Saturday committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling at a Navy hospital in Mumbai, a defence official said.

Jasvindar Singh, from the Artillery Center at Nashik, was admitted to the Indian Naval Hospital Ship Asvini for a chronic stomach ailment. His body was found hanging from the ceiling in an empty room at 8:30 am on Saturday, the official said.

The incident took place on the fifth floor of the hospital and Singh used his turban to hang himself from the ceiling fan.

“Singh is from Artillery Center at Nasik and he was admitted in the hospital for a chronic stomach ailment. Following his hanging, body was discovered in the morning. The hospital authorities informed the Army officials and accordingly the local police were informed,” said the spokesperson of defence.

Singh was hospitalised since October 11. The local police have informed Singh's family members and they are expected to come by Monday.

Police was immediately informed and are investigating the matter. Army authorities were informed by the hospital and an inquiry into the incident is being ordered, the official added.

An officer from Cuffe Parade police said, “We have reported the incident as accidental death report. We are trying to investigate the reason for him to commit suicide, for which the statements of his family members are important. The person with whom the deceased was sharing the room was the first one to witness the incident. No suicide notes have been found.”
