The N M Joshi Marg police have arrested a man for forging caste certificates. The police say the accused initially worked as a caste certificate agent, and later began to make fake certificates, which he sold for Rs 2,000-Rs 3,000 each.

A case was registered on Wednesday and the accused, identified as Mahendra Ganpat Pawar (34), was arrested immediately. PSI Santosh Kamble from N M Joshi police station said, “Pawar has been forging caste certificates for more than two years.

He was a caste certificate agent and helped people get the certificates in a short time. Later, he started making fake certificates and fooling people.” In his statement to the police, Pawar said that his clientele consisted primarily of people who wanted to apply for admission in schools for their children through the backward class quota.

The incident came to light when the seed of doubt was sown in a parent’s mind after he saw collector’s office spelt as collection office on a certificate. Senior PI Ajay Pathankar said, “We have recovered four fake government stamps and several bogus caste certificates from his residence in Virar.”

Pawar has been booked under Sections 420 (cheating and dishonestly inducing delivery of property), 465 (punishment for forgery), 467 (forgery of valuable security, will, etc), 468 (forgery for purpose of cheating) and 471 (using as genuine a forged document or electronic record) of the IPC and has been remanded in police custody. He has been arrested in a case of cheating earlier as well.
