An inseparable centenarian couple from Mira Road, who were married for over 70 years, and joked about leaving this world together, stunned family members on Monday, when they passed on barely nine hours apart. Haji Nathuji Rathod, 107, and his wife Naseeban Rathod, 104, originally from Manoharpur in Jaipur, had moved to Mumbai 55 years ago. The two were laid to rest next to each other at the Mira Road Kabrastan last evening.

The couple had four children, two sons and two daughters. According to relatives, Haji died at 3.30 am on Monday, after developing breathing complications. "We were all preparing for his final rites, when at 12 pm, his granddaughter informed us that Naseeban had suddenly fallen ill," said Mohammed Mansuri, a relative. "Even before we could get medical help, she had given up."

Incidentally, the couple often joked about "dying together". "They were happy and content, and loved each other dearly. There wasn't a day when they were away from each other. They would also visit their son in Jogeshwari together," Mansuri said.

According to Mansuri, Haji had been admitted to a hospital with breathing problems two days prior. During that time, Naseeban kept insisting that she be taken to see him. "We finally brought him home on Sunday, but he passed away," Mansuri said. Naseeban wasn't suffering from medical complications at the time, the family confirmed. "After she learned about the death of her husband, her condition began to deteriorate. It came to her as a shock," he added.
