State housing minister Sachin Ahir, Health Minister Suresh Shetty lost by heavy margins in their respective constituencies; four-time Bandra West MLA Baba Siddiqui also lost out
Sunday brought bad news for former ministers and incumbent MLAs, mainly from the Congress and NCP, as the election results showed voters had rejected them. Among the heavyweights who bit the dust were State Housing Minister Sachin Ahir, Health Minister Suresh Shetty, four-time Bandra West MLA Baba Siddiqui and three-time Colaba MLA Annie Shekhar.

Three more former ministers and incumbent MLAs Kripashankar Singh from Congress, Nawab Malik from the NCP and Chandrakant Handore from Congress were booted out. Singh lost Kalina by 7,120 votes, Malik bowed out of Anushakti Nagar by a margin of 1,007 votes and Handore lost Chembur by 10,027 votes. All of them were defeated by Shiv Sena candidates.

Other heavyweights
Two-time MLA Madhu Chavan from Congress lost his Byculla seat to first-timer Wasir Pathan from the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen. In the island city, three-time Congress MLA from Colaba, Annie Shekhar, was unseated by BJP’s Raj Purohit by a margin of 23,787 votes. In fact, Shekhar came third Purohit won the seat with 52,608 votes, Shiv Sena’s Pandurang Sakpal was second with 28,821 votes, and Shekhar received 20,410 votes.

In the western suburbs, two Sena heavyweights tasted defeat at the hands of former ally BJP’s candidates. In Goregaon, incumbent Subhash Desai lost out to hitherto unknown Vidya Thakur (63,629 votes) by a margin of 4,756 votes. In Dahisar, Vinod Ghosalkar, another Sena favourite, lost out to Manisha Chaudhary (77,238 votes) by a margin of 38,578 votes.
Some MLAs, however, were able to retain their bastions. Congress’s Amin Patel (38,188 votes) was elected MLA of Mumbadevi for the second time, with a margin of 8,513 votes. BJP’s Malabar Hill MLA, Mangal Prabhat Lodha (97,818), won by an astounding margin of 68,686 votes. The runner-up, from the Sena, was far behind with 29,132 votes.
