The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), on Monday claimed that leptospirosis is triggered due to unchecked migration of people from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and other states to Mumbai.

The party's stand was supported by the Shiv Sena and opposed by the Samajwadi party in the civic general body meeting.
Speaking in the meeting, MNS corporator Sandip Deshpande, alleged that migrants from other states do not consider the city as their own and complained that they do not keep it clean. He also blamed the haphazard shanties occupied by the migrants, as the reason for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) not being able to access and clean them.
Deshpande said, "Those who accuse our hospitals of not having sufficient infrastructure do not realise that these have been equipped to meet the demands of Mumbaikars and not the large number of migrants Mumbai is forced to support. Mumbai is reaching its bursting point and the leptospirosis deaths is a classic example. We need to check migration as this city is failing to support its original residents because of the load."
Even the ruling party, Shiv Sena has supported MNS' stand this time. Yashodhar Phanse, Shiv Sena leader and standing committee chairman, said, "Areas occupied by migrants are among those worst affected by leptospirosis". Phanse then urged the administration to come up with a policy to tackle the menace of illegal food stalls in the city.
