To curb speeding on the Eastern Freeway, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has decided to install 12 CCTV cameras between SV Patel Junction on P.D’Mello Road and Panjarpol – a 14-km long stretch – after the Mumbai traffic police and officials of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation recently conducted a survey. A protective wall will also be constructed at some of the stretches of Eastern Freeway.

“We are installing the system at an approximate cost of Rs.60 lakh. The cameras are state-of-the-art and with its advanced technology, it is possible to check not just the speed of the vehicles plying on the Freeway; but also the number plates clearly. The main control room of these cameras will be situated at Worli traffic police headquarters. The cameras are manufactured by Kerala based ARS traffic and transport technology Ltd,” said MMRDA Joint Project Director (PR) Dilip Kawathkar.

“It is observed that many drivers do not follow traffic discipline and indulge in over-speeding. This has caused a few accidents recently. Moreover, there are residential areas in Anik to Panjarpol sections. We have to ensure safety of these residents as well. Hence, the Authority has constructed a six and a half feet tall protective wall there. We have already put up a number of signages and information boards reminding the motorists to follow traffic rules,” added Kawathkar.
