Around 75 passengers on a luxury bus miraculously survived after the bus they were travelling in toppled over on Thane's Ghodbunder Road on Monday afternoon.
The police said 28 passengers were injured and have been admitted to two different hospitals.
The Kasarwadavli police have registered a case against the driver for rash and negligent driving and are looking for the driver who ran away after the incident.
The police, during the investigation, found that the bus was overloaded, leading to the driver losing control of the wheel. The luxury sleeper bus is owned by Khaira Transport and the owner has been identified as Jora Singh Khaira who is from a part of Uttar Pradesh that is close to the Nepal border. The bus was heading from Borivli to the Nepal border, when the incident took place.
Santosh Kadam, an official from Regional Disaster Management Cell of TMC said traffic on the road was stopped for more than half-an-hour.
Dhinkar Chandankar, Assistant Police Inspector, said, "We have filed a case against the driver, who had fled from the accident site. We found that the bus with a capacity for 50 passengers was packed with 75 passengers."
