After their downfall, weapons used by the militants will now be sold to Mumbai's underworld, fear cops

The fall of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) militants in Sri Lanka could spell disaster for Mumbai. The weapons used by them will now make their way to the city's underworld, claim the police.u00a0u00a0u00a0u00a0u00a0

Sources in a central intelligence agency said a huge cache of arsenal has already slipped into the country.u00a0

Rakesh Maria, joint commissioner of police (Crime), said, "We are keeping a close watch on gunrunners
operating in and around Mumbai. It is very likely that the weapons used by the LTTE will be bought by arms dealers at cheap rates and sold to gangsters."

The police pointed out that the LTTE's defeat could also encourage the formation of splinter gangs, as weapons will now be available at cheaper rates.u00a0

"Apart from Mumbai, gunrunners will also find buyers in militants and Naxal groups. LTTE had been supplying sophisticated arms to Naxals in Maharashtra," revealed a cop.

So far, the underworld has been buying weapons from Afghanistan or the illegal arms markets in Thailand and Cambodia.
