Killer highway: Chicken truck kills 3, injures one on Mumbai-Pune Expressway

Incident occurred at Kamothe near Mumbai-Pune Expressway when the three men were crossing the highway; cops launch manhunt to nab the absconding truck driver

Adding to the growing number of fatalities on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, three men of the same family died on the spot after they were run over by a truck ferrying chickens. The incident occurred yesterday at 7 am, outside the McDonald’s outlet in Kamothe near the expressway.

The deceased were identified as Kant Padenath Patil (45), Shiva Vishwanath Patil (35) and Eshwanath Patil (45), from Pune. Another pedestrian, who was knocked down by the truck, escaped with minor injuries. The accident occurred while the trio was crossing the expressway after alighting from a tourist bus. The truck driver fled the spot after the mishap and is now on the run. The birds in the truck were unharmed.

A sub-inspector from Kamothe police station said the Patils were on their way home when the incident took place. “Another pedestrian sustained minor injuries in the mishap and was rushed to MGM Hospital in Kamothe where he was treated in the out patient department (OPD).”

The bodies were sent to Gramin Hospital in Panvel for post-mortem following which the relatives were informed. All three bodies were claimed in the afternoon. Despite repeated attempts, the relatives remained unavailable for comment.

A case has been registered against the truck driver at the Kamothe police station under sections 304 (a), 337, 427 and 338 of the Indian Penal Code; the truck has been confiscated. “We are in the process of nabbing the truck driver,” an official said.
