Dr Wafi Ansari, a resident doctor of the opthalmology department from JJ hospital was allegedly manhandled by angry relatives of a patient at around 1.30 pm on Monday.

According to reports, relatives of Prakash Ambre, a cataract patient waiting to receive a bed, allegedly resorted to violence against Dr Ansari over the delay to admit the patient.

This incident takes place just two days after the Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) called off their statewide strike. One of MARD's demands was security for resident doctors.

Ambre, who is undergoing treatment at the hospital for his cataract, was allegedly made to wait alongside six other patients.

Ambre, who was also suffering from an eye infection was provided with food and other amenities, but did not get a bed as there were limited beds and many patients with similar ailments were waiting. Meanwhile, relatives who were accompanying Ambre got furious due to the delay and attacked Wafi, who was apparently trying to explain them the situation.

"I was only trying to calm the relatives who were arguing and accusing us for the delay when the situation went out of hands. The relatives grabbed me by my neck and I almost chocked for a moment. Soon the other doctors and ward boys intervened and he let go off me," said Wafi while talking to mid-day.

The doctors went to JJ Marg police station to file an FIR against the relatives of the patient for physical violence.
