A student refused to let circumstances bog him down, when he wrote his SSC exam paper from an ambulance outside the nearest exam centre. After having fractured his leg in an accident a night before, the boy was admitted to a hospital, but he decided he wouldn’t miss his exam.

Arun Swami (15), a Std X student of Little Flower High School in Andheri (East) fractured his right leg after he skidded from his bike around 10.30 pm on Thursday night, barely 12 hours before he was to write his English paper.

The accident occurred near Bisleri factory and Swami was rushed to Cooper Hospital and then transferred to KEM Hospital, Parel for further treatment. Speaking to mid-day, his principal, Shailaja Shikhare, said, “The boy was admitted to KEM on Friday at 3 am.

But he expressed his desire to take the exam and not drop an entire year. Around 8.15 am, his mother contacted me and narrated the entire incident, asking what should be done.”

The school’s vice-principal, Veena Kulkarni, called up the Board office in Vashi and asked whether Swami could appear for the paper. “The authorities informed us that he would be required to take the test from the nearest exam centre. They gave us three choices and we chose RM Bhatt High School in Parel,” said Kulkarni.

Genuine case
Board officials verified the case to be genuine before approving the request. Laxmikant Pande, Mumbai divisional chairman of the SSC and HSC board, explained, “We sent an education inspector to check the genuineness of the case.

When we realised he wouldn’t be able to travel to his centre in Andheri, we allowed him to take the exam from an ambulance outisde the nearest centre. The boy’s determination to still write the exam is commendable.” Finally at 11 am yesterday, Swami wrote the English paper along with his batchmates, while being seated in an ambulance.

He was granted a writer to help jot down his answers. He is still in hospital. Shubangi Parkar, the dean of KEM Hospital, told this correspondent that the boy was brought in post-midnight.

She said the kneecap of his right leg was injured. “We admitted him, but since he was keen on writing the paper, he was allowed to do so in an ambulance after the education inspector gave the approval.”
