This story is proof enough that CCTV footage is crucial while trying to solve crime cases.

A case of an attempt to loot Meena Jewellers, a jewellery shop near Kanjurmarg railway station on December 1, 2010, by five thieves has been solved with two from the gang being arrested by the police. Three of the accused are still absconding.

The attempt was foiled when vigilant shopkeepers had raised an alarm, and chased the gang away, following which the five had dashed into Kanjurmarg railway station, leaving the car they had arrived in, abandoned at the scene of crime.

On Friday night, the Vikhroli police arrested Kannan Murgesh Thewar alias Talpadi (35) and Anand Rao alias Anna Kalidas (49). The arrest was possible with the help of CCTV footage that the police received from the railway station, clearly showing the five entering the station.

The police arrested Thewar and Rao from their Antop Hill residence. "We recovered a country made revolver," said senior police inspector S Gaikwad of Vikhroli police station.

Madurai alias Murgesh alias Chandran Tewar, Vinay Nair and one more accused are yet to be caught.

"The accused have been booked under section 395 (Punishment for dacoity), 506 (2) (Punishment for criminal intimidation), 34 (Acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), and the Indian Arms act," said Gaikwad.
