The incessant rains have led to four people losing their lives in three separate incidents of building and wall collapses in the city. While one labourer lost his life and five others were injured when an under-construction building came crashing down in Cuffe Parade, a wall collapse in Malad led to the death of an 11-year-old boy. In Sewri, two men lost their lives when the slab of a building fell on them.

On Saturday morning at around 10 am, the ceiling of an under-construction house in Ganesh Murti Nagar in Cuffe Parade collapsed when bricks and other construction material was loaded on it. The residents rushed to rescue the six labourers who were working on the house. While five of them were pulled out in the next 15-20 minutes, Mushraf Shaikh (18) was the last one to be found among the debris, after which he was rushed to the state-run St George hospital in Fort. Shaikh was declared dead on arrival. “I heard a loud thud after the roof collapsed and we immediately started pulling the labourers out of the debris. However, Shaikh was trapped inside and we found him after half an hour,” said Prashant Umape, a resident.

The six men hail from West Bengal and were hired by a private contractor, Mangal Khanawjia. The injured were Mohammed Kalam (45), Sudeep Hazara (29), Shaurat Ali (18), Yusuf Shaikh (39) and Menaryl Shaikh (33). An on duty doctor from the hospital said they sustained head injuries but were conscious while being admitted to the hospital. “Their condition is stable as of now. However, one of them will be shifted to JJ hospital for a CT scan to rule out any further complications,” he said.

Shaikh’s cousin brother Abdarul Shaikh said that after the post-mortem, his body will be taken back to his village in West Bengal where his parents reside. A sub-police inspector from Cuffe Parade police station where the case was registered on Saturday, said that the contractor has been booked under section 304a of the IPC and further investigations are on.

In Malad, the heavy rains resulted in a portion of a wall of Wageshwari Mandir in Malad East collapsing at around 3.47 pm, claiming the life of a 11-year-old boy Sujit Pawar. An official from the BMC disaster management said that his body was shifted to Kandivli’s Shatabdi hospital where a post-mortem will be conducted.

In the third tragic incident, two people lost their lives and one was seriously injured when the slab of a building came crashing down in Sewri. The three men were sitting near a pan shop near the structure, when the collapse took place. The incident happened at around 11 pm on Friday at Jaibhim Nagar in Sewri. The two deceased have been identified as Daya Shankar Mishra (60) and Rudraman Upadhyay (45), while the third person Tribhuvan Upadhyay (58) sustained serious head and leg injuries and is undergoing treatment at the JJ hospital.

According to cops, “Two years ago the same building known as Lucky Mansion was declared dangerous by the BMC officials and belonged to a private firm called Abraham & Sons Pvt. Ltd. The victim, Tribhuvan, had a pan shop in the building and was sitting with his brother Rudraman and relative Daya Shankar when the incident took place.”

“I was sitting and having dinner with my brother and relative when suddenly the outer slab portion outside my shop came crashing down. The slab had a crack through which water used to leak during monsoon,” said Tribhuvan.

The relatives of the victim said that Rudraman and Tribhuvan ran the pan shop at the ground floor of the building, while Daya Shankar had come to Mumbai to meet the brothers. They added that their native place is in Uttar Pradesh.
