Ghatkopar building collapse: Man rescued after 15 hours of being trapped

In a truly wonderful twist of fate, Rajesh Doshi (57) was rescued after 15 hours of being stuck in the debris of the ill-fated Siddhi Sai Housing Society at Ghatkopar

The death toll in Mumbai’s Ghatkopar building collapse on Wednesday has risen to 17. As many as 30 others have been injured. But in a truly wonderful twist of fate, Rajesh Doshi (57) was rescued after 15 hours of being stuck in the debris.


Rajesh’s wife and son had gone to visit a temple nearby and Rajesh was at home when the building collapsed. Miraculously, even though he was trapped in the debris, his phone with him that remained undamaged.


He then called up his son and informed him the he was alive, could breathe but could not get out as his legs were pinned under huge slabs of rubble.

The family informed the NDRF who immediately launched into looking for the trapped man. They looked for him tirelessly and finally managed to rescue him almost 15 hours later. Rajesh was rescued and immediately rushed to a nearby Shantiniketan hospital and is said to be stable.

According to residents of the ill-fated Siddhi-Sai Cooperative Housing Society, the pillars of the building got weakened due to ongoing renovation of a nursing home located on its ground floor, reportedly owned by a local Shiv Sena leader, leading to the collapse yesterday morning.

Till 9 pm yesterday, 23 people were pulled out, of whom 12 were declared dead while 11 injured were admitted to hospitals.
