The 2.1 km flyover will ease congestion at Shivaji Nagar, Bainganwadi and Deonar dumping ground junctions and benefit those travelling towards Navi Mumbai.
It will be a much-needed breather for those using the Link Road as it will decrease traffic jams and hence travel time of commuters.
This link road is an important road connecting the eastern suburbs to Navi Mumbai. It sees an average of 10,000 vehicles frequenting it every hour.
In his budget speech, Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta had announced a flyover over this road. The announcement came right after the fire at the Deonar dumping ground and when public sentiments were strongly against the BMC.
Citizens living in Govandi, Deonar and Chheda Nagar have been facing problems due to heavy vehicles on the road. There were even accidents of people trying to cross or those involving smaller vehicles. On January 25, the BMC invited bids for this project.
The flyover will be 2.1 km long and around 24.2 m wide. At its highest, it will be 12 m from the surface. The construction period is of 30 months including monsoon and the BMC has estimated a cost of R313 crore. The bidder will be finalised in March.
“I am happy about the flyover because it will allow long-distance vehicles above while local residents can use the road below. It will lessen the chances of accidents,” said local corporator Raees Shaikh.
The BMC has also planned an underpass for those going towards Mandala Road anticipating a bottleneck where the flyover lands.
