Family accuses ex-cop's son of raping woman who committed suicide

The son of a retired senior policeman has been accused of rape by an electrician, who lost his wife after she committed suicide. The Saki Naka police have arrested Bhushan Bhagwan Lahane, son of retired Assistant Comm-issioner of Police, Bhagwan Lahane, for abetment to suicide, but not for the alleged crime of raping the deceased.

The accused is also a leader of Bharatiya Janata Party’s Yuva Morcha (North Central Mumbai). The cops now say that since the body has been disposed of, they could only book the accused for abetment to suicide.

There was also a post-mortem carried out on the body. According to the victim’s husband, a resident of Chandivli, his wife Seeta (name changed) was in Varanasi on May 15 along with his two kids — one eleven-year-old and the other, an eight-year-old.

That’s the time he learnt that his friend Bhushan Lahane, and son of the retired senior cop, was going to Varanasi for some work. He asked his friend to bring back his wife also from Varanasi to Mumbai so that he need not go. “On the way Bhushan said that air tickets were not available and booked a single room in a hotel and raped my wife,” said the electrician (36).

“Though my wife did not tell me about it, she committed suicide on August 5 in our house by hanging herself, before which she called my friend Raju Chaudhary, and narrated the whole incident to him, as well as to my eight-year-old son,” said the victim’s husband.

“We went to the cops after the funeral, a post mortem was carried out on the body and witness statements are enough to register a rape case. My son has seen everything,” claimed the electrician. After Seeta’s death, the family registered a case with the Saki Naka police and the cops arrested Lahane for abetment to suicide.

“The cops did not register a rape case against Bhushan and now they are telling us how can we register one, as the body has been disposed of by the family and (they ask) what’s the evidence to prove rape,” said the electrician.

“The family never told us about the rape, they only told us about harassment and on that grounds we arrested the accused,” said senior police inspector based at Saki Naka, Avinash Dharmadhikari. However the family claims that the 11-year-old son who saw Bhushan misbehaving with his wife and the eight-year-old son to whom Seeta narrated the incident a day before the suicide can be witnesses.

The electrician says that his friend Raju Chaudhary whom Seeta had called, can also be a witness but the cops are not registering a case. In her suicide note, Seeta wanted her husband not to be harassed. She also pleaded that good care should be taken of her kids.
