The new bridge will come up as an extension to the existing one at the Dadar-end on Parel station and is expected to be completed by January 2018. On Thursday, preparatory work of shifting a few high-tension cables, fencing off the area and excavation was started on the Parel side.

Bailey-type bridge
The army will build a Bailey-type bridge, which is a portable, pre-fabricated structure. The area for the FOB was marked, a few obstructions identified and the basic assembly process has now begun. The foundations will take a month to build and the assembled bridge will take just five days to be placed above the foundations, officials said. The length of the bridge will be 110 metres and its width will be 3.24 metres. "The army team today [Thursday] started excavations and other preparatory works at the site. The approval of the commissioner of railway safety is expected soon following which work is expected to begin in a full-fledged manner," said Ravinder Bhakar, Western Railway's chief public relations officer.

All co-operation
Central and Western Railway officials said the army team would be given night and Sunday blocks as and when required, once they send the details for the FOB. "We will extend all possible co-operation to the army teams and co-ordinate with them on the timings of the blocks," said Sunil Udasi, Central Railway's chief public relations officer.
