The Dindoshi Sessions court on Thursday rejected the bail application of Chintan Upadhyay, who is accused of conspiring the murder of his wife and fellow artist Hema Upadhyay.

The court heard the arguments led by defense and prosecution last month. Chintan had filed the bail application before the Dindoshi Sessions court on September 2, in which he stated that there was no dispute between him and Hema and that he had also paid Rs 16 lakh to her in alimony the day before her death.

Opposing the bail, the investigating agency, in their reply, stated that Chintan and Hema used to fight frequently over his multiple extra-marital affairs. In addition, one of the accused – Pradeep Rajbhar – revealed in his confession that Chintan was the main conspirator. Now, however, Rajbhar has retracted his statement which the cops feel is due to pressure from Chintan. The cops also added that if Chintan is granted bail, he might help or influence the prime accused Vidyadhar Rajbhar, who is currently absconding.

Mumbai Police emphasised that they are yet to file additional technical evidence before the court and since Chintan is not a resident of Mumbai, once he receives bail, he might disappear.

Besides Chintan, the police have arrested Shivkumar Rajbhar, Pradeep Rajbhar and Vijay Rajbhar. Another key accused Vidyadhar Rajbhar, who is accused of carrying out the twin hits on Chintan’s behalf, is absconding.
