Death at Nhava Sheva: Tehsildar orders inquiry, calls meeting of companies

Following mid-day’s reports on the death of an electrician in the Nhava Sheva container terminal from allegedly inhaling fumes emanating from a container full of beef that had been lying untouched for four years, the Tehsildar of Uran has ordered an inquiry into the matter.

He has also called a meeting with officials of all the companies handling container yards across Uran taluka to discuss the issue of disputed containers. Speaking to mid-day, Nitin Chavan, Tehsildar of Uran, said, “We have now arranged a meeting with all the terminal representatives on August 10 in which we will be discussing the issue of containers not getting cleared from the terminals.

We will also discuss issues related to toilets and basic amenities for the truck drivers coming to the terminals.” He further added that he was not aware of 300 other disputed containers lying with AllCargo Logistics. “After reading the report in your newspaper, I came to know about the condition inside the terminal.

We will investigate the matter and take necessary action with the help of the State Pollution Control Board,” Chavan added.

Officials from the JNPT Customs House revealed that it is the responsibility of the company handling the container freight station (CFS) to see that the cargo coming to the terminal is cleared on time.

“Customs officials are appointed to look after the cargo passing through these terminals, however it is the responsibility of the company running the CFS to check that disputes while clearing the cargo are looked into and solved at the earliest.

Any cargo coming to the CFS becomes the sole responsibility of the company and the Customs has nothing to do with it,” said Manoj Das, Superintendent of Customs at JNPT. Officials from the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) said that they are responsible only for issuing a no-objection certificate for disposing damaged cargo.

“We issue an NOC only when we get an application from the concerned party for disposing the cargo. Further, if the cargo is found harmful to the surroundings, we impose penalties,” said an official from MPCB.
