The brutalised stray found —with her toes chopped off and an eye busted open — near Dahisar fish market almost a fortnight ago is now stable, say doctors.
"She is eating regularly and recovering fast," said Dr Vikram Dave, a Borivli-based veterinarian, who is treating the bitch. "Her wounds have healed. We are waiting for her to be completely stable, only then can we go ahead with the amputation surgery of her limb."
Timely save
The bitch was first spotted in a battered condition by one Jaiprakash Masurkar, a resident of Patil Chawl in Dahisar west, who informed animal activist Christina Lobo about it. Under her guidance, Masurkar wrapped the animal in a sheet and took her to Dr. Dave's clinic in an autorickshaw (as there were no ambulances available at the time), where she was treated. Later, she was shifted to Thane SPCA to recover.

Dave pointed out that one of the bitch's eyes had to be removed as well. "It is not functional and must be removed," he said, adding, "We will go ahead with both surgeries next week after doing the required blood tests and making sure that the animal is completely stable."
Cash constraint
According to Dr. Dave, the cumulative cost of both surgeries would be R20,000. "I will have to pay this money and am still figuring out how to get the funds for it," said Lobo. "She (the bitch) was in a terrible state of shock — we never thought she would survive the ordeal," admitted Dr. Dave. "But she's definitely a fighter."
