PUTTING her children's interest above all else almost proved fatal for a woman from Malad, whose husband stabbed her repeatedly with a chopper last night for not letting him meet them.

Ramesh Shetty stabbed his wife and ran away

Ramesh Shetty (38) a resident of Mira Road married Sugandha Shetty (35) from Malad in 2001.

According to the police, Ramesh did not have a job and Sugandha, who works for a telecom company, took care of the family's needs.

Prema Shetty, Sugandha's sister, said, "Ramesh would come home drunk and assault her on a daily basis. He did not even have a permanent job.

We finally got my sister and her kids home in 2008 and convinced her to file for divorce.

He had been asking to see his children and to be with them ever since, but Sugandha did not allow it as he is not capable of taking care of them."

Ramesh called up Sugandha yesterday and asked how the kids were doing.

After she answered, he insisted that she allow him to be with them. When she disagreed, he asked her to meet him at a nearby dairy.

"When Sugandha got to the dairy around 8 pm, Ramesh stabbed her multiple times in her head, stomach and face and ran away," said an official from the Dindoshi police.

Sugandha was rushed to the Sanjeevani Hospital in Malad where she was admitted to the ICU in a critical condition.

Inspector Swapan Chowdhury of the Dindoshi police said, "We have filed an FIR against Ramesh. A team visited his Mira Road residence to look for him, but he was not there. A manhunt has now been launched to nab the accused."
