The crushing fall of an under-construction flyover in Barrabazar in Kolkata is a cause for worry for Mumbai as well. IVRCL, the company that was constructing the bridge, is involved in important road projects in Maharashtra.

The company, IVRCL Assets and Holdings along with Kakade Infrastructure had formed a consortium called, Sion Panvel Tollways Private Limited (SPTPL) and implemented the project of widening the 23 km-long Sion-Panvel Highway. Pic for representation

The company, IVRCL Assets and Holdings along with Kakade Infrastructure had formed a consortium called, Sion Panvel Tollways Private Limited (SPTPL) and implemented the project of widening the 23-km-long Sion-Panvel Highway.

The over Rs 1,700-crore project has been implemented on Built Operate Transfer (BOT) basis and the consortium has a contract of collecting tolls for a period of 17 years and 5 months.

When questioned if the company will be black listed or will the construction quality of the work that has been finished would be checked, an MSRDC official said, “The incident that took place in Kolkata is unfortunate, but we cannot jump to conclusion and hold the company responsible. An inquiry is always done in such incidents and so we will wait for the report. The work of widening the Sion-Panvel highway along with the construction of flyover has been done as per the best standards and all our structures are completely safe.”

The website of the company states that at present, it has an ongoing road project in Maharashtra which is the four-laning of 77.99-km-long Baramati-Phaltan Road and Phaltan-Lonand Shirwal Road.

Quality analysis
Pune district Collector Saurabh Rao said, “If such a company IVRCL is running a project in our district, I will definitely look into the quality analysis of the current project they are working on and we will be taking immediate precautionary measures. But as per my knowledge, the four-lane project of 77.99-km-long Baramati-Phaltan road and Phaltan-Lonand Shirwal roadwork has been stopped some two years ago, due to land acquisition issues and the state highway is been converted to national highway. But, I will personally probe if the IVRCL project in Pune is linked to it.”

Despite repeated attempt to contact BJP MP Sanjay Kakade, who runs Kakade Infrastructure, he remained unavailable for comment.

Background
According to reports, in 2011 the company, IVRCL, had come under the CBI scanner for alleged irregularities in a Tsunami Housing Project in Puducherry.
