A ceiling fan came crashing down on the stomach of a 23-year-old patient at the female ward in the facility yesterday.
Laxmi Mali was undergoing treatment at the hospital for respiratory problem that she developed after delivering a baby girl two months ago. "At 10 a bolt came loose from the ceiling fan over my wife's bed and fell on her head. I got scared and ran towards a nurse to complain about it.

While I was telling her about the bolt, I saw the ceiling fan suddenly crashing down on my wife. I ran towards her to cushion the fall with my hands, but to no avail. The fan had already landed on her stomach and she was writhing in pain", said Santosh Mali, Laxmi's husband.
Looking at her condition the hospital staff suggested that Mali take the patient to the casualty ward. "There was no external injury but she was complaining pain in her abdomen. The doctor told me to do an X-ray for which I had to pay from my own pocket," he said.
Mali's heart had already started sinking as he thought of a possible fracture, but the X-ray report, which said there was nothing serious, came as a respite. "I am thankful to God that nothing serious happened," he said.
He alleged that the hospital staff had charged him for the tests. "Since the hospital administration was responsible for the accident, logically they should have paid for the expanses," he added.
Dean of KEM Hospital, Dr Sanjay Oak replied through an SMS, "It was an accident. The patient has been thoroughly assessed. Injury is not grievous. Nonetheless engineering services have been ordered to check all ceiling fans."
The History
In the past also there was a similar incident when a concrete slab fell from the ceiling and injured a 19-year-old boy at the servant quarters of the hospital on February 27.
