Central Railway gets a leg up on Army, makes FOB in just over two months

The Central Railway (CR) has created a record of sorts in Mumbai by building a foot overbridge (FOB) from scratch in just over two months. Sanctioned after the September 29 Elphinstone stampede, the FOB at the Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, is set to be opened by January 26, much before the army-constructed bridges at Parel, Currey Road and Ambivli get ready. Union railway minister Piyush Goyal praised CR for this feat on Saturday.

"When we brought in the army, our officials were very unhappy and rightly so. But I got in the army as they have their men and material ready, which the railways don't. But the Elphinstone station FOB episode has lit a fire in the belly of the railway system, so much so that the general manager of CR, DK Sharma has assured me that before the army finishes their bridges, he will have one bridge ready," said Goyal said at an event in the Bombay Stock Exchange.

The tender for the FOB at LTT was finalised in a record 24 hours on November 14, 2017. The acceptance letter was issued and handed over to the contractor the same day and work began on November 16. The cost of the project was about '2.97 crore. The new bridge is being constructed at CSMT-end of the station near the new LTT building and will connect all five platforms. It will have ramps on all platforms at one end and stairs on the other.
