At the time when crime against women is on the rise, Western Railway (WR) officials have decided to install closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras inside women compartments of local trains.

“We have called for tenders to procure CCTVs worth Rs 25 lakh for now. These will be installed inside ladies compartment,” said Shailendra Kumar, Divisional Railway Manager (Mumbai), Western Railway. Sources revealed that initially, these cameras would be fitted inside five to six trains, depending on the cost quoted by private contractors for the equipment.

Railway authorities are planning to set-up the cameras inside both first- and second-class compartments. For larger compartments of second class, at least six cameras will have to be placed to cover the entire area. Smaller compartments of first class may require four.

The recording of CCTVs is expected to capture good quality images, said WR officials. Moreover, these images will be saved in their main server that can be retrieved as per their requirement.

Long way to go
According to officials, the installation of CCTVs is expected to take at least three to four months, as only after the contractor is selected, they will begin the process of installing the cameras in local trains.
