Motorists using the Mumbai-Pune Expressway will have to drive with extreme caution while passing through the Khandala tunnel, as the authorities will be initiating maintenance work on a 300-metre stretch from today to March 11. During this period, one of the three lanes will remain inaccessible for the motorists.

Speaking to mid-day, an Expressway control staffer said, “The maintenance work will be taking place at the Khandala tunnel — on a 300-metre stretch — where there are potentially loose boulders and scree. The repair work will commence from Monday and go on till March 11. To ensure that motorists aren’t inconvenienced, only one of the three lanes will remain shut during this time. In case of jams, traffic will be diverted to the old Mumbai-Pune highway. We suggest motorists drive slowly while passing through the tunnel. The work site will have adequate lighting and manpower, generator back up, an ambulance and a fire tender to tackle an untoward incident if any. Signboards will also be installed to caution the motorists.”
