Residents of Bandra, a suburb in west Mumbai, have alleged that an eatery, that’s yet to open, is violating civic rules.

The locals of Bandra (West), who have been complaining about the rising issue of illegal eateries since a pub in the area caught fire in August, have filed numerous complaints against Sassy Spoon, coming up at Hill Road, including encroaching on the footpath, illegally constructing a permanent roof instead of a monsoon shed, and illegally building a compound wall..

The authorities have sent the restaurant owners a stop work notice.

In the complaint, mentioned in letters to the Corporationm filed with the H/West Ward, the residents talk about the activity around the restaurant disturbing the serenity of the area. The restaurant, incidentally, shares the compound wall with Carmel Convent School and Junior College and is close to the Holy Family Hospital and the St. Andrews Church.

One of the residents and a trustee of with NGO AGNI, Shyama Kulkarni said, "There were various violations in the guise of monsoon shed, the compulsory open space has been encroached upon by having a fixed roof and side compound walls and sliding windows. The restaurant has also ripped off the footpath in the guise of beautification without any permissions."

Corporator of H west ward, Asif Zakaria, said, "On September 22, 2014 H/West ward issued stop work notice against illegal construction, but now I have complained to the Commissioner on how the work was still on in spite of a notice and asked for explanation as to why there has been no action?"

The spokesperson for Sassy Spoon said, "All we were doing to the footpath was re-laying the paver blocks because they were in bad condition with the exact same paver blocks used previously, with the permission of the BMC. The restaurant we have taken over has all the necessary permissions to run as per law. All we are doing is renovating the restaurant to bring it back to what it was previously, but doing enough to prevent rats from entering since it was heavily rat infested."
